Who Needs a Dental Implant Restoration?

A dental implant restoration is a method of teeth replacement that utilizes a dental implant, abutment and artificial tooth (restoration) to replace one or more missing teeth. When to consider a dental implant restoration

There are certain times when a dental implant restoration might be a more ideal teeth replacement solution than traditional dentures or a fixed bridge. The following is everything to know about when to consider a dental implant restoration for teeth replacement. 

Single tooth replacement

Dental implants are effective at replacing a single missing tooth through the attachment of an abutment and dental crown. There are many times when the patient has a healthy mouth but is only missing a single tooth, which might be the result of a blow to the face, poor oral hygiene in the past or another issue that leads to tooth loss. As long as the patient has enough healthy bone in the area where the missing tooth exists, then they likely make a good candidate for dental implant restoration treatment. 

Replacing a small section of missing teeth

One of the great benefits of a dental implant restoration is that it is able to replace multiple missing teeth. For patients who are missing a section of teeth, a dental implant with a dental bridge attachment might be the most ideal solution. A dental bridge is often referred to as a partial denture, and they look, feel and function much more like natural teeth when they are attached to a dental implant. 

Replacing an arch of missing teeth

A dental implant can also replace all missing teeth on the bottom arch, top arch or both. This form of dental implant restoration is commonly referred to as a full arch replacement, and it is the best way to replace missing teeth long term. It is done by strategically placing several dental implants into the jaw, and a full denture is fixed to the abutments of the implants. When compared to traditional dentures, implant-supported dentures provide a more secure hold. 

What to expect during the restoration process

There are certain steps that typically occur in the restoration process. The first step is to get an oral examination, get dental X-rays and find out if any preparations are needed before implants placement. The patient may need a bone grafting procedure or gum disease treatment beforehand. After implants placement, the mouth will need to heal and the bone will need to fuse together with the implant. After this step takes place, the abutment and dental implant restoration can be attached.
